If You Build It They Will Come…March 22 to Camelback for Cardboard Box Derby of course!

Camelback Cardboard DerbyCamelback Mountain invites one and all to celebrate the majesty of this spectacular snowsport destination sending winter out with a bang at the annual Cardboard Box Derby March 22. Part of a weekend filled with fun starting off with a Parking Lot Party and Pond Skimming, this challenge dares everyone to test their architectural ability or just brace themselves for some hilarious antics observing from the sidelines.

Describing Cardboard Box Derby as, “Part of a weekend-long event that celebrates the beginning of spring and wraps up another winter season with a bang,” Camelback’s Kelly Joffe considers the annual ritual a “blast!

The goal is to construct a cardboard vehicle capable of enduring a race down Camelback’s Sunbowl trail. Spectators line the boundaries eager to catch a glimpse of the curious sights in store. From pineapples to birthday cakes, these non-edible transports join clever contraptions of all sorts.

While building rules and regulations displayed on their website maintain sanity, with safety key, Joffe reveals, “Most of the time the cardboard vehicles fall apart halfway down the trail or crash before they finish.” She tells how conquering this feat intact is met by triumphant cheers from the crowd.

All are welcome to participate in the race with Joffe noting the “usual suspects” consist of employees from local businesses and Camelback departments. Family time proves a factor in building teams with hopes the same bonding adheres to cardboard creations.

Prize categories including Best in Show, Best Time, Best Corporate Team, Best Employee, even Best Crash applaud efforts. Season passes, Camelbeach and Mountain Coaster tickets, as well as, gift certificates from local businesses are in the mix with a panel of judges determining to which victors go the spoils.
