Did You Know…While one welcomed sign of spring, besides calm winds and above freezing temperatures, continues to be the sound of our fine feathered friends’ blissful chirping chatter; the courtship activity of the woodcock takes things just a bit further.
Male timberdoodles establish singing grounds in wet woodland and field clearings where they “peent” to attract females. Flying upwards of 300 feet on twittering wings before spiraling back to earth in a zigzag pattern sounding a liquid warbling song, he sets his sights on “wooing” the females.
This intriguing exhibit sounds strangely similar to some of the playful winter slope antics we all may have demonstrated at times…doesn’t it?
